These figures are inclusive of backlog vacancies — SC 2, ST 5 and OBC-NCL 5. PwBD candidates need not less than 40 percent of the identified disability to claim the benefit.
Design Trainee or Management Trainee — Which Should You Apply For?
This is the single most important decision in this notification, because you may apply for one post only. Submitting applications for more than one post — for example MT (Mechanical) and DT (Mechanical) — leads to rejection of the candidature, and any fee paid is forfeited.
The difference is where you will work. Design Trainee posts are meant for HAL’s Research & Design Centres (R&D). Management Trainee posts are meant for the Production, Overhaul and Service Divisions. Vacancy spread differs too — Design Trainee includes Aeronautical and Instrumentation but no Production or Civil, while Management Trainee includes Production and Civil but no Aeronautical or Instrumentation. Match the post to the kind of work you want, then check that your branch is listed under it.
Educational Qualification
A Bachelor’s Degree in Engineering or Technology is required, obtained as a regular, full-time course from a recognised university or institution under the 10+2+4 pattern (10+3+3 for lateral entry). Part-time, correspondence, e-learning and distance education courses are not accepted.
Only the branches named in the advertisement qualify. Candidates holding an engineering degree in any other branch are not eligible. Broadly:
- Aeronautical (DT only): Aerospace, Aeronautical
- Electrical: Electrical; Electrical & Electronics; Electrical & Instrumentation; Electrical, Instrumentation & Control; Electrical & Power
- Electronics: Electronics; Electronics & Communication; Electronics & Telecommunication; Electronics (VLSI Design & Technology); Electronics & Control Systems; Electronics & Communication (Communication System Engg.)
- Instrumentation (DT only): Instrumentation & Control; Instrumentation & Electronics; Applied Electronics & Instrumentation; Electronics & Instrumentation
- Mechanical: Mechanical; Mechanical & Industrial; Mechanical & Production; Mechatronics; Mechanical & Automation
- Computer Science: Computer Science; Computer Engg.; Computer Science & IT; Information Technology; Information Science & Technology; Computer Systems Engg.; Information Systems; Information Science & Engg.; Software Engg.; Computer Technology; Computer Science & Engg.; CSE (Artificial Intelligence); CSE (AI and Machine Learning); CSE (Cyber Security); Computer and Communication Engg.; Computer Networking
- Metallurgy: Metallurgy; Materials & Metallurgy; Metallurgy & Materials Engg.; Metallurgy & Materials Technology; Metallurgy & Material Science
- Production (MT only): Industrial Production; Production Engg.; Industrial Engg. & Production; Mechanical Production & Industrial; Production Engg. & Management; Industrial Engg.; Manufacturing Engg.; Production & Industrial; Industrial Engg. & Management; Manufacturing Science & Engg.; Manufacturing Process & Automation; Mechanical Stream-Production; Industrial Engg. & Operations Research
- Civil (MT only): Civil Engg.
Candidates with a five-year Integrated Degree in a notified discipline are eligible. Those holding both a Diploma and an Engineering Degree must enter the marks of the Engineering Degree as qualifying marks in the online application.
Aggregate Percentage of Marks
| Post | UR / OBC-NCL / EWS | SC / ST / PwBD |
|---|---|---|
| Design Trainee (all disciplines) | 70% | 60% |
| Management Trainee (all disciplines) | 70% | 60% |
The aggregate is calculated by summing total maximum marks and total marks obtained across all semesters or years. No rounding off is done and no weightage is given to any particular semester or year — so 69.8 percent is not 70 percent for this purpose.
Final-year students may apply, provided they have secured the prescribed aggregate up to the last semester or year examined at the time of applying. Their selection remains subject to obtaining the minimum aggregate in the final degree, with documentary proof required at the interview stage in September 2026. Where CGPA or letter grades are awarded, the equivalent percentage must be entered as per the university’s own norms, and a Conversion Certificate has to be produced at the interview.
Age Limit
The upper age limit is 28 years as on 14 August 2026 for UR and EWS candidates.
- SC / ST: 5 years relaxation
- OBC (Non-Creamy Layer): 3 years relaxation
- PwBD: 10 years, over and above SC / ST / OBC-NCL relaxation
- J&K domicile (ordinarily domiciled between 01-01-1980 and 31-12-1989): 5 years
- Ex-Servicemen / Commissioned, Emergency Commissioned and Short Service Commissioned Officers with at least five years of military service: up to 5 years
After all relaxations, age must not exceed 56 years for PwBD candidates and 55 years for others. Candidates from OBC-NCL, SC, ST or EWS who apply under the UR category are treated on par with UR criteria — including the age limit.
Application Fee
Rs 500/- (inclusive of GST) is payable by UR, OBC (NCL) and EWS candidates. SC, ST, PwBD and internal HAL candidates are exempted. Convenience fee and taxes, if any, are borne by the candidate over and above this amount. The fee is not refundable under any circumstance, so verify your eligibility carefully before paying.

Keep ready before you start: a valid email ID, a passport-size colour photograph in .jpg under 180 KB, Aadhaar and mobile number, semester-wise marks, and employment details if applicable. Print and retain the Application Confirmation page.
Selection Process and Exam Pattern
Selection is by an online computer-based test on an All-India basis followed by a personal interview at Bengaluru.
| Part | Section | No. of MCQs |
|---|---|---|
| Part I | General Awareness | 20 |
| Part II | English & Reasoning | 40 |
| Part III | Concerned Discipline | 100 |
| Total (Duration: 2 hours 30 minutes) | 160 | |
The test can be taken in Hindi or English, chosen at the time of applying and not changeable later. Note the weightage: 100 of 160 questions come from your engineering discipline, so preparation should be centred on core branch subjects rather than general aptitude.
Shortlisting and Final Merit
- Candidates are shortlisted for interview in the ratio of 1:5 to the number of vacancies in each discipline and category.
- All UR candidates, along with SC / ST / OBC-NCL / EWS candidates who do not avail any relaxation, are grouped and ranked together for the UR list. Reserved-category candidates not making that list are regrouped into their own categories and called in a 1:5 ratio there.
- Final merit is 85 percent weightage for the online test and 15 percent for the interview.
- A minimum of 50 percent marks each in the written test and interview is required to qualify, with relaxation for reserved categories as per rules.
Candidates choose any three cities as test-centre preference. Preference confers no right to a particular centre, and no change is considered afterwards. Carry an original photo ID — Voter ID, Driving Licence, Aadhaar, Passport, PAN, a Government/PSU employee ID, or your last College ID with an attested copy — or you will not be allowed to sit the test.
Stipend, Training and Service Bond
Selected candidates undergo a 52-week training programme covering theoretical and on-the-job modules, drawing a stipend with Basic Pay of Rs 50,000 per month plus Variable Dearness Allowance and Canteen Allowance. Bachelor accommodation is admissible during training as per company rules.
On successful completion, trainees are absorbed as Engineers in Grade-II, pay scale Rs 50,000 – 1,60,000, and become eligible for VDA, Cafeteria-system perks, company accommodation or HRA, Performance Related Pay, medical facilities, PF, gratuity and other superannuation benefits.
Selected candidates must execute a Service Agreement Bond to serve HAL for 5 years excluding the training period. Breach makes the candidate liable to reimburse actual training and recruitment expenses, subject to a maximum of Rs 15,00,000.
