Eligibility by Grade
- Assistant Professor Grade II (Pay Level 10 & 11): Candidates with less than 3 years of post-PhD teaching, research or industrial experience
- Assistant Professor Grade I (Pay Level 12): Candidates with at least 3 years of post-PhD teaching, research or industrial experience
The common minimum qualification across all departments is a PhD with first class or equivalent in the preceding degree, in an appropriate branch, with a very good academic record throughout.
Department/School-wise Specialisation Areas and Qualification
1. Biosciences and Bioengineering
Areas: Bioinformatics, Biostatistics, Biosensor, Bioinstrumentation, Computational Biology.
Bachelor’s/Master’s background: 4-year Bachelor’s or 5-year integrated Master’s in Biotechnology / Biochemical Engineering / Chemical Engineering / Bioinformatics / Biosciences and Bioengineering, OR 4-year Bachelor’s in Engineering/Technology, Agricultural Sciences or Pharmaceutical Sciences, OR MBBS/BVSc, OR 5-year integrated M.Tech, OR 5-year integrated MS in Biological/Physical/Chemical/Data Sciences, Mathematics or Statistics, OR 3-year BSc/BS followed by a 2-year Master’s in the same fields.
2. Chemical Engineering
Areas: Process Control in Chemical Engineering; AI & Machine Learning in Chemical Engineering.
Background: Bachelor’s degree in Chemical Engineering.
3. Civil Engineering
Areas: Construction Engineering & Management (cementitious materials, contract management, construction informatics); Environmental Engineering (system design, wastewater/water treatment, air pollution, solid/hazardous waste, environmental planning); Geotechnical Engineering (computational geomechanics, offshore geotechnics); Structural Engineering (computational mechanics, AI/data-driven structural engineering); Transportation Systems Engineering (network analysis, ITS, pavement modelling); Water Resources Engineering (hydraulics, hydro-climatology, river basin management, hydrology); Earth System Science & Engineering (seismology, computational geosciences).
Background: 4-year Bachelor’s or 5-year integrated Master’s in Civil Engineering.
4. Computer Science and Engineering
Areas: All areas of Computer Science and Engineering.
Background: 4-year Bachelor’s, or Bachelor’s plus Master’s, or 5-year integrated Master’s in Computer Science/CSE or a relevant discipline.
5. Design
Areas: Design & Technology (HCI/UX, AR/VR, information design, AI in design, IoT-driven design, smart manufacturing, mobility design); Design for Society (sustainability, social innovation, healthcare innovation, craft); Design & Business (product-service systems, design management/strategy/entrepreneurship); Communication Design & New Media (visual/graphic design, film, AVGC); Design Research & Methods (cognitive ergonomics, design theory).
Background: 4-year Bachelor’s, 2-year Master’s, or 5-year integrated Master’s in Design, Technology, Engineering, Architecture, Management, Fine Arts, Visual Arts, or Physiology (Ergonomics).
6. Electronics and Electrical Engineering
Areas: Communication networks, wireless/radar systems, AI/ML, quantum communications; biomedical signal processing, core AI, reinforcement learning, remote sensing, NLP, image processing; robotics, data-driven control, control theory; analog/digital/mixed-signal/RF circuit design, IC packaging, nano/power/compound semiconductor devices, quantum technologies; electrical machines and drives, power electronics, power systems, high voltage; silicon photonics, optical communication, nanophotonics, metamaterials, RF/microwave, terahertz photonics.
Background: 4-year Bachelor’s or 5-year integrated Master’s in Electrical/Electronics/Instrumentation/Communication/Telecommunication Engineering.
7. Mechanical Engineering
Areas: Fluid and Thermal (multiphase flows, turbulent flows, climate modelling); Manufacturing (industrial engineering, operations research, automation and control); Machine Design (experimental mechanics, multifunctional materials).
Background: 4-year Bachelor’s or 5-year integrated Master’s in Mechanical Engineering.
8. Chemistry
Areas: All areas of Experimental Inorganic and Organic Chemistry.
Background: Bachelor’s plus Master’s, or 5-year integrated Master’s, in Chemistry / Chemical Science and Technology.
9. Humanities and Social Science
Areas: Archaeology, Development Studies, Economics, English, History, Linguistics, Philosophy, Political Science, Psychology, Sociology (all areas). Candidates specialising in Indigenous Knowledge and Communities, including History of Indian Science/Mathematics/Astronomy, Indian Philosophy, Indian Musical Traditions, Indian Archaeology, Indian Aesthetics, Tarka and Vada, and Vyakarana and Indian Linguistics, are especially encouraged to apply.
Background: PhD in the relevant advertised area.
10. Mathematics
Areas: Machine Learning/Deep Learning/AI/Data Science; Statistics and Mathematical Finance; ML/Deep Learning in Optimization/Operations Research; Algebraic Geometry, Partial Differential Equations.
Background: Varies by area – PhD/Master’s/Bachelor’s in Data Science, AI, Computer Science & Engineering, Mathematics, Mathematics & Computing, Statistics, Optimization, Operations Research or Industrial Mathematics, as relevant to the specific specialisation.
11. Physics
Areas: Gravity, Astrophysics and Cosmology; High Energy Physics (experimental collider physics, phenomenology); Condensed Matter Physics Theory; Quantum Optics and Quantum Technology; Laser and Photonics (optical communication, silicon photonics, terahertz photonics, fibre optics, biomedical optics).
Background: Bachelor’s plus Master’s, or 5-year integrated Master’s, in Physics / Applied Physics / Engineering Physics.
12. School of Business
Areas: Marketing Management, Management Information System.
Background: PhD in Management.
13. Mehta Family School of Data Science and Artificial Intelligence
Areas: NLP, Generative AI, AI in IoT, information systems & security, data mining, machine learning, human-AI interaction, computer systems & networking, AI in robotics, agentic AI, big data analytics, cloud computing, neuromorphic computing, AI in FinTech/high-frequency trading, AI in wireless networks, speech & language technologies, computer vision, trustworthy AI, and other emerging areas.
Background: 4-year Bachelor’s or 5-year integrated Master’s in Data Science/AI, Mathematics, Statistics, Computer Science & Engineering, or Electronics/Communication/Electrical Engineering.
14. School of Energy Science and Engineering
Areas: Control and automation for renewable energy systems and grid/storage integration; solar PV, wind and other RES; intelligent energy management; flexible electronics for energy; electrocatalysis/photoelectrocatalysis; carbon capture and storage; hybrid energy storage systems; sustainable buildings.
Background: Bachelor’s or 5-year integrated Master’s in Energy/Mechanical/Electrical/Electronics/Chemical Engineering.
15. Jyoti and Bhupat Mehta School of Health Sciences and Technology
Areas: Computational biology, computational neuroscience, stem cell biology, regenerative medicine, cell and molecular biology, immunology, microbiology, host-pathogen interactions, embedded systems, ASIC for medical devices, biomedical control systems, brain-computer interfaces, human-computer interface, transport phenomena in biological systems, drug delivery, and any healthcare research domain (only for candidates with MBBS and PhD).
Background: 4-year Bachelor’s in Engineering/Biotechnology, 4-year BS, or 5-year integrated Master’s in Engineering, OR BS(4yr)/MS(5yr) in Physics/Maths/Biological Sciences, OR B.Pharm, OR MBBS.
Other Important Conditions
- Pay and allowances follow Government of India rules; reservation follows the Central Educational Institutes (Reservation in Teachers’ Cadre) Act, 2019
- Age relaxation: SC/ST 5 years (10 years combined), OBC-NCL 3 years (8 years combined), PwBD 5 years; valid category certificates must be uploaded with the application
- Degrees must be from a recognised University/Institute
- Candidates in Government/Semi-Government organisations or educational institutions need a No Objection Certificate at the time of applying or interview
- Candidates may apply to more than one Department/School, but must submit a separate application for each
- Incomplete applications, or those without the relevant certificates/documents, may not be considered for shortlisting
