Educational Qualification

You need a Master’s degree from a recognised university in any one of these combinations:

  1. Master’s in Hindi, with English as a compulsory or elective subject, or as the medium of examination, at degree level; or
  2. Master’s in English, with Hindi as a compulsory or elective subject, or as the medium of examination, at degree level; or
  3. Master’s in any other subject (that is, other than Hindi or English) studied through the Hindi medium, with English as a compulsory or elective subject at degree level.

In addition, candidates need a recognised Diploma or Certificate course in translation from Hindi to English and vice versa, or two years’ experience of translation work between Hindi and English in a Central or State Government office, including a Government of India undertaking.

The wording here matters. The Hindi-English pairing must appear in your degree-level record, not just at postgraduate level — this is where many otherwise strong applicants fall out.

Age Limit

Maximum 30 years, reckoned as on the closing date for online applications, 7 September 2026. Relaxation applies as per Central Government rules: SC, ST, OBC and PwBD candidates get the standard relaxations, and government servants can receive up to 5 years.

Application Fee

₹500 for General, OBC and EWS candidates, payable online. SC, ST and PwBD candidates are exempted. Reporting varies on whether women candidates are also exempt, so confirm your own category in the notification PDF before paying.

Selection Process

Selection is by written examination in two papers:

  • Paper-I — Objective type. Tests general Hindi and general English at the level expected of a translator.
  • Paper-II — Descriptive type. Translation and essay work, which is where actual translation skill is assessed.

Paper-II cannot be prepared for by MCQ practice alone. If you are applying, put your preparation time into translating passages both ways under timed conditions and into writing essays in both languages.
