NIT Silchar JRF Recruitment 2026 – Apply for Junior Research Fellow Post

National Institute of Technology (NIT) Silchar, an Institute of National Importance in Assam, has invited applications from Indian citizens for a temporary post of Junior Research Fellow (JRF) in the Department of Electronics & Communication Engineering under Advertisement No. NITS/Dean(R&C)/ECE/677/03/2026 dated 04 August 2026.

The fellowship sits under a project sponsored by the Department of Biotechnology (DBT), Government of India, working on lab-on-chip based bio-reactors that mimic human glomerulus ultrafiltration and the reabsorption function of the kidney’s proximal tubule, with a view to in-vivo implantation.

Two points are worth reading carefully before you apply. The post is initially for four months only, extendable subject to availability of funds. And there is no online portal — the completed application goes directly to the Principal Investigator by email, with a specific subject line that the notification prescribes.

About the Project

The sanctioned project is titled Design and Modeling of Lab-On-Chip based Bio-reactors Capable of Mimicking Human Glomerulus Ultrafiltration and Reabsorption Function of Proximal Tubule of Kidney for in vivo implantation. It is led by Dr. Koushik Guha as Principal Investigator with Prof. K. L. Baishnab as Co-PI, both from the Department of Electronics & Communication Engineering.

In plain terms, the work sits at the intersection of microfluidics, MEMS and biomedical device design — building a chip-scale system that reproduces how a kidney filters and reabsorbs. That framing matters when you write your application, because the desirable experience the notification asks for maps directly onto it.

Eligibility Criteria

Essential Qualification

Degree M.E./M.Tech in Electronics & Communication Engineering, Biomedical Engineering, or Mechanical Engineering with specialisation in microfluidics and MEMS — or a related field — from a recognised University or Institute
Minimum Marks 60% in the Master’s or equivalent degree, with a good academic record
Mandatory Test GATE or NET qualified

The GATE or NET requirement is not optional. It sits alongside the degree as an essential qualification, so an M.Tech with 60% but no valid GATE or NET score does not meet the bar. The application format itself carries separate rows for NET and GATE details, including the qualifying date and validity, which tells you how closely this will be checked.

Desirable Experience

  • Good working knowledge of microfluidics and MEMS simulation tools
  • Prior experience in the modeling, simulation and fabrication of micro-devices

Desirable is not the same as essential, but with a single vacancy and a screening step built into the process, candidates who can evidence simulation and fabrication work on micro-devices are in a materially stronger position.

Age Limit

The upper age limit is 35 years, reckoned as on the closing date of application, 21 August 2026. If you want to confirm exactly where you stand against that cut-off, our free age eligibility calculator settles it in a few seconds.

Fellowship and Tenure

The monthly fellowship is Rs 37,000, with HRA and other allowances or increments provided as per project and institute norms.

Tenure is initially four months and may be extended based on availability of funds. Candidates weighing this against a longer contract elsewhere should factor that in — the notification makes no commitment beyond the initial period, and extension is tied to project funding rather than performance alone.

How to Apply

There is no online form. The process is entirely by email:

  1. Download and fill the application format printed with the advertisement, which covers personal details, education from Class X onwards, NET/GATE details and employment history, with a passport size photograph pasted in place.
  2. Sign the form and scan the signed copy.
  3. Email the scanned form along with your CV and all supporting documents to the Principal Investigator at koushik@ece.nits.ac.in.
  4. Use exactly this subject line: “Application for the post of JRF under DBT project BT/PR49483/MED/32/922/2023”.
  5. Ensure it reaches by 21 August 2026.

The prescribed subject line is worth getting right. A PI running a funded project receives a large volume of mail, and a correctly labelled application is far less likely to be missed during shortlisting. If you need to combine certificates into a single attachment or bring scan sizes down, our free JPG to PDF converter and photo and signature resizer both run in the browser.

Selection Process

Selection is by interview. The date, time and mode — online or offline — will be notified in due course by email, and call letters for shortlisted candidates are sent by email only. There is no separate advertisement for the interview schedule, so the email address you supply in the application should be one you check regularly.

The Institute has explicitly reserved the right to restrict the number of candidates called for interview on the basis of screening, and states that no candidate may be recruited if suitable candidates are not found. Meeting the minimum eligibility therefore does not guarantee a call.

Other Conditions

  • Employed candidates must submit a No Objection Certificate from their employer at the time of interview.
  • Selected candidates must sign an agreement at the time of joining.
  • Applications are invited from Indian citizens only.
  • Candidates belonging to SC/ST/PH/OBC must attach the relevant certificate with the application form.
